We believe in co-oping.

At Rock Spring Cooperative Preschool, we believe that the heart of a successful education lies in the partnership between families and educators. We believe that when families actively participate as assistant teachers, they create a stronger bond with their child’s learning journey and foster a deeper understanding of the classroom experience. We believe that co-oping allows parents to engage directly with their child’s growth, promoting a sense of shared responsibility and community. Through this collaboration, we build stronger connections, support each child's individual development, and create a truly inclusive environment where families, children, and educators learn and grow together. And most importantly, it’s a lot of fun!

How does co-oping work?

  • In the classroom

Co-opers serve as teacher assistants on a rotating basis. We require 11-14 co-op days per year per student enrolled, depending on the class. Co-opers work closely with teachers to facilitate learning, explore new skills, and maintain adult-to- student ratios required for state licensing. Sign up for co-op days happens at the beginning of the year so you can plan your co-op days well ahead of time! Scheduling conflict - no problem, families and staff work together to cover any last minute scheduling changes to ensure coverage.

  • Who can co-op?

Parents or legal guardians are required to fulfill at least 50% of each school year's co-op days that are assigned during the school year. A nanny, another family member, or friend can cover the other 50% of the co-op days. Grandparents are frequent and popular co-opers in the classroom! We offer a co-oping buy-out option on a case-by-case basis but we encourage families to take advantage of the opportunity to be a part of their child's classroom. Each co-oper is required to complete four education hours per year. While it is mandated, most members find the education opportunities helpful, reassuring, and a great time to build community with other parents and teachers.

  • Additional commitments

Families play an active role in the life of our preschool by participating in community responsibilities throughout the year. Each family is asked to attend two evening membership meetings to help shape school policies and strengthen connections. Families also contribute their time and skills by serving on a committee—such as Facilities, Membership, Fundraising, Communications, or Health & Safety—that supports the smooth running of our school. In addition, each family participates in at least one annual work party, a three-hour session dedicated to cleaning classrooms, making repairs, and maintaining the grounds.
